New life abounds in the Vermont springtime along with baby groundhogs in her pony's field, but knowing how her father feels about them, ten-year-old Keeker decides to stage a "Save the Groundhogs" play.
Upon learning that an older woman has moved into run-down, creepy Crabapple Farm, nine-year-old Keeker rides over on her pony, Plum, to find out whether the woman is a witch.
Keeker and her parents take Plum the pony and Goatie the goat to visit Keeker's aunt, uncle, and cousins in upstate New York, near the town of Sleepy Hollow, the site of a famous scary story.
When eight-year-old Keeker gets a pony, she is faced with the challenge of winning the animal's trust and friendship, and they both come to understand the phrase "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours."
Katherine "Keeker" Dana decides to run away rather than give up her beloved pony, Plum, when her parents suggest they will buy her a bigger pony for her eleventh birthday, but an interesting new neighbor girl might lead to a better solution.
